Artist Talk at AHH Studios: Andy Black
We are thrilled to welcome Andy Black back to AHH next week for a talk about his recent work! Based in Malton, Andy is a co founder and former studio holder at AHH Studio Collective and a lecturer at Leeds Arts University.
Andy has built an index of around 200 drawn forms, a kind of evolving visual language. Some come from the landscape, others lean geometric and sharp-edged, while some are softer, more amorphous, almost blobby. They can feel like topiary, architecture, or even something slightly animated.
He uses these forms to construct imagined exterior spaces — part garden, part city, part stage. Ambiguous territories where shapes gather, multiply, and interact.
Join Andy to hear him talk about his process, accumulation, and building worlds through drawing.
Tickets: £5 pp No need to book!

Malton Museum Reopens for the 2026 Season
On Saturday 4th April, Malton Museum reopens its doors to the public.
Find out about Malton’s fascinating history from the Roman heritage to Medieval artefact discoveries, the Georgian Boomtime and more!
MALTON MUSEUM REOPENS FOR 2026 SEASON
Malton Museum reopens for the summer season on Saturday 4th April and will be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1030 to 1530 until early November. The museum only has two rooms which are changed every winter in order the museum can show more of its large store of exhibits. The entry fee of £5 for adults has been frozen for 2026.
The two rooms have separate themes this year reflecting Malton’s colourful history.
In the eastern room the theme is Roman Myth and Mysticism where the visitor will discover superstitions from long ago and learn about the role of magic in Roman Derventio. Pictured below is a smith pot made in the pottery kilns at Norton, with applied decoration depicting blacksmith's tools, wheels and arms, these vessels are thought to be associated with the worship of a smith god
And earlier than that we have our mysterious chalk figurine pictured below and possibly this was an offering to the pagan gods.
In the western room, visitors will learn about the influence of Monks, Merchants and Medecine, and the effect these had on Old Maltune (as it was then known) and St Mary’s Priory. Here visitors can learn about the Gilbertine monks and meet the merchants who bought wealth and prosperity to the town. The museum’s displays team have recreated the interior of a Victorian Pharmacy so come and see some of the wondrous potions that were available to treat all manner of ailments. The museum has worked closely with the Woodham Stone collection on this room.
Outside the museum there are town tours and summer lectures to whet your appetite and of course not forgetting Malton Roman Festival V on Sunday July 19th where discounted early bird tickets are available for that event.
