Circular Malton

Malton aims to be the UK’s first circular economy market town. Find out more below about the various community projects that are striving to make this happen.

Visit Malton CIC is fully committed to supporting the ‘Circular Malton’ vision to be the UK’s first circular economy market town. In its mission to run environmentally friendly events, Visit Malton CIC is committed to the responsible disposal of waste, which, since 2019, has led to all our events being free of single use plastics, there’s been a massive reduction in the number of tonnes of waste being generated and zero waste goes to landfill (what cannot be recycled is used for energy reclamation).

Circular Malton

Visit Malton is proud to be a founding member of Circular Malton and Norton. This sustainability movement was founded in 2019 with the aim to “embrace a strategy of empowering the community from the ground up, advocating for changes which will be environmentally and socially beneficial, whilst making sense economically.”

Projects that are currently underway include:

  • Ryedale Remakes which is now based at 6-8 Railway Street

  • Community Anaerobic Digester (AD)

  • Upcycling Workshops & Innovation Workshops

Ryedale Remakes

Ryedale Remakes was started in early 2023 by members of the Circular Malton and Norton team with a view to it being a hub for upcycling and reusing unwanted items. The not-for-profit company aims to make it easy to be sustainable allowing visitors to buy, donate, remake or even take part in upcycling workshops.

Artists and crafts people who specialise in a variety of crafts and trades, have helped to transform once forgotten items into unique, useable pieces again!

The Free Fridge Network

The Free Fridge Network helps to prevent food waste by collecting fresh and safely edible foods like baked goods, fruit and vegetables from local businesses and then it re-distributes the items to prevent them from going to landfill or waste disposal.

No referrals are required, anyone can visit the Free Fridge to take away food, free of charge, from the volunteer led community project.

The Malton Free Fridge opened in December 2018 and in 2023, 23,578 Kilos of food was weighed in which helped to feed 15,683 people!

Opening Times:

Malton Free Fridge: Mon, Wed & Sat, 10am-11.30am.
