Malton Museum Lecture: Alex Harvey - "Yorkshire In The 'Dark Ages': What happened after the Romans left?"

Malton Museum Lecture: Alex Harvey - "Yorkshire In The 'Dark Ages': What happened after the Romans left?"

Copyright of Alex Harvey.

Alex Harvey the first summer lecture at Malton Museum

“Yorkshire In The 'Dark Ages': What happened after the Romans left?”

About the author: Malton Museum are delighted to host noted author Alex Harvey. Alex is a postgraduate history student at the University of York, where he spent 8 years, with a focus on Scandinavian York. He has written for numerous journals and has presented research for York Archaeological Trust, Lancaster Historical Postgraduate Conference, and Leeds International Medieval Congress. Through a desire to disseminate complex academic theory and developments into an engaging and entertaining format, Alex is always writing scripts for talks, manuscripts for books, and outlines for future projects.

Abstract: The gap between the end of Roman Britain and the dawn of 'Anglo-Saxon' England is often characterised as mysterious, shadowy, and populated by legendary figures like King Arthur. Within Yorkshire, all evidence suggests these two centuries were a period of both change and continuity. Grand Roman architecture remained in the landscape at sites like York, Malton, and Catterick, repurposed or abandoned entirely, just as wholly new dynasties and kingdoms were formed out of the ruins of the old Empire. This story is not a clean, linear narrative, but rather a collection of beginnings: Yorkshire alone is home to the post-Roman realms of Northumbria, Elmet, Loidis, Catraeth, Craven, and many more. It is through archaeology, like the many finds from Malton Museum, as well as place names, that we can best reveal these hidden histories.

Details:

The talk will commence at 7pm on Thursday 21st May in the Malton Assembly Rooms (entry through the Museum at 6:30pm. Tea and coffee will be available. Cost is £10 per person and you can buy a ticket through the Malton Museum website. https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/online-booking/

Honey & The Bear '26 Album Tour

Honey & The Bear have been a tour de force on the UK festival circuit in recent years. The British folk and roots duo bring folklore to life with delicately interweaving vocal harmonies inside a dynamic world of songwriting.

With a diverse range of sounds and textures, and rhythms that flow from the fast and furious to gentle ballads, their live performances are spirited and enthralling. Conjuring stories in song, they tell tales of Suffolk folklore, courageous people they admire and their passion for nature which has been enchanting audiences up and down the country.

The multi-instrumentalist pair, comprised of songwriters Jon Hart (guitar, bass, bouzouki) and Lucy Hart (guitar, ukulele, bass, banjo, mandolin and percussion), are joined on stage for this show by band guests Toby Shaer (fiddle/flutes/whistles) and Archie Churchill-Moss (melodeon) who also feature on all three Honey & The Bear studio albums.

Together they have played at many revered venues and festivals across the UK as well as travelling across the channel for European shows. They played sold out back-to -back shows at the world famous Snape Maltings Concert Hall to launch their second album in 2021. Third album ‘Away Beyond The Fret’ was released on November 3, 2023 with a UK tour and another sold out show at Snape Maltings.

An Evening with Jack The Ripper - The Milton Rooms

Whitechapel. 1888. Between August and November a series of women are brutally murdered. The identity of the killer remains a mystery. Until now..?

It’s the greatest unsolved case in criminal history. One that continues to confuse and confound. Generating argument, debate and a host of different theories.

Who was he?
What was his motive?
And how did he get away with it?

Was he a doctor, a sailor, a soldier or some kind of religious zealot intent on ridding the streets of vice?

‘An Evening with Jack the Ripper’ will delve into the sordid realms of Victorian London in an attempt to finally unmask the man, with the blackest of hearts, who preyed upon the most vulnerable members of society. Award-winning producer and broadcaster Steve Morgan has captivated thousands of people on his celebrated ‘Ripper walks’ through the east-end of London, where he retraces the steps of the notorious killer through the streets he stalked.

Now he has adapted the story for the stage and invites you to spend an evening in the company of Jack the Ripper and live to tell the tale.
