A TALK CELEBRATING THE NEW ,THE OLD AND THE QUIRKY.
A celebration of buildings in Malton, Norton and Old Malton will be given by museum volunteer Simon Green.
The talk will look at the rich diversity of buildings within the three settlements that make up this wonderful place.
The title is inspired by the proverb of ‘waste not want not.’ You don’t knock something down if it can be adapted. We have a wide variety of buildings that have been adapted and changed over time but for example the Market Place appears little altered.
We have three important medieval churches and a whole host of chapels yet we have lost a major castle and most of a grand 17th century mansion. As we dash around in our busy lives there is little time to linger and look at the fascinating buildings that surround and contain our everyday life. This talk will celebrate some of these wonders, from hidden medieval crypts to grand Edwardian houses, from Victorian town planning to bespoke places for 21st century supported living, from 19th century workers housing to almost vanished industries.
With lots of old and new images the talk will celebrate the many delights of our three towns.
Simon Green is an architectural historian who previously worked in Historic Environment Scotland’s Survey & Recording Team, managing the Buildings at Risk Register. Over the last 30 years he has published and lectured widely on numerous aspects of the historic environment. Simon has a wealth of knowledge regarding the architecture and changes to buildings of the towns of Malton, Norton and Old Malton.

When it comes to scattering their mother’s ashes, three siblings are hit with a bombshell revelation that turns their world upside down
This remarkable play, by Clap Trap Theatre in association with York Theatre Royal, is based on the very simple premise that ‘it’s not what you say, it’s the way that you say it’ The first act is a full-blown, larger than life comedy. Then, after the interval, the characters swap round and it’s repeated as a serious drama. The difference between the two Acts is astonishing.

Hilarity Bites Comedy Evening
Hilarity Bites Comedy Club Evening
Date: Friday 25th April 2025
Time: 8pm
Location: The Milton Rooms, Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LX
Tickets: £10pp
Event Overview
The June line-up for Hilarity Bites features:
Aaron Simmonds, who has been failing to stand up for 32 years. Luckily he is far better at comedy than standing up. Aaron has appeared on the A-Z Horror Stories (Sky Studios), Russell Howard Hour (Sky), Undeniable (Comedy Central), Guessable (Comedy Central) and has been heard on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio Scotland. He offers sharply observed comedy which is grounded in his disability, but is by no means limited by it. Aaron performed his critically-acclaimed debut shows, Disabled Coconut and Hot Wheels, at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019 and 2022. He was an Amused Moose Comedy Award Best Show finalist and was nominated for Best Comedy Show in the Broadway World UK Edinburgh Fringe Awards in 2019.
Alex Mitchell, a 2024 Britain’s Got Talent Finalist, is an autistic comic with functional neurological disorder (FND). Using self deprecating humour – laughing at himself, his neurodivergence, disability and sexuality – to reflect on some of the most difficult subjects within his own life and wider society. His debt show, Tics Towards Puffection, tackles his desperate obsession for perfection and being ‘the best version’ of himself. He explores how and if he’ll ever achieve this, and how this has and continues to impact his life.
Chris Lumb, as seen on Russell Howard’s Good News, is no stranger to comedy. As the manager and performer of improv group ‘The Discount Comedy Checkout’ he’s played gigs with them for 12 years. In this time he’s developed an MC style which has fun with the audiences and makes the night fully rounded. With more strings to his comedy bow than a funny Robin Hood, he’s a comedy director having award-winning films played at festivals such as Raindance. He also started a YouTube channel imaginatively titled Chris Lumb Comedy where he creates sketches and live show videos.
This show may contain strong language and adult themes and is not suitable for under-16s.
Please note that line-ups are subject to change in extreme and unavoidable circumstances and this show contains strong language and adult themes and is not suitable for under-16s.

Delving into the history of the forecast and the extraordinary people who made it, Charlie explains what those curious phrases really mean, celebrates its wide cultural impact, shares rip-roaring adventures from his own extraordinary journey through the 31 sea areas – the times he was accused by the media of trying to annex Rockall from the British government and sang sea shanties with Tom Hardy in a Manx hotel bar while Scary Spice pulled the pints – and presents his case for the shipping forecast being our finest achievement.
Inspired by Charlie’s bestselling book, which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide, this pacy, moving and hilarious show takes you all the way from Viking to South East Iceland to ensure the shipping forecast will never sound the same again.
“Charlie Connelly is one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in a studio with…He has a natural wit that doesn’t get crushed by an over-zealous ego with a lovely personality attached to it.” Fi Glover, broadcaster
“Charlie is always warm, funny and engaging…I actually sent him a fan letter – and I’ve never done that to anyone in my life before.” Bernard Sumner, New Order
“I can thoroughly recommend an evening spent in the company of the very funny and very lovely Charlie Connelly, whose knowledge of what I call ‘the ships’ is excellent. Sou’westers optional.” Corrie Corfield, BBC Radio 4

Malton Museum Roman Festival 2025
Malton Roman Festival 2025
THE EMPIRE IS BACK - MALTON MUSEUM ROMAN FESTIVAL and tickets are now live here: Roman Festival 2025: tickets now on sale!! - Malton Museum
Date: Sunday July 20th
Time 10:30am to 4pm
Tickets: Adults £10 | Kids 14 -18 years £5 | Kids under 14yrs free.
Malton Museum is celebrating it’s 90th birthday this year. Founded in 1935 it was first called The Roman Malton Museum. It had been created in response to a series of archaeological excavations conducted around the town which uncovered some exciting finds, asserting the importance of Delgovicia in the Roman world.
The Museum works hard at its community engagement by doing lectures, town tours and Roman experience visits to local schools. As part of our 90th birthday celebrations, the museum is inviting you to make 2025 the year you get involved, whether that's by visiting the museum, volunteering, or attending one of our events.
We've also commissioned local print artist Emily Burns to create a limited run of 90 prints inspired by an item in our collection. The Goddess of Malton is her interpretation of a Roman fresco uncovered in the town and now on display in the museum. Pop into the museum or Roman Festival to purchase your own copy!
Four years ago, it launched its largest ever community project by hosting the Roman Festival. It was a great success and since then has gone on to grow and evolve into one of the most exciting historically themed family days out in the area.
Organised completely by volunteers and funded by grants from local businesses and other agencies, the 2025 Roman Festival will once again celebrate life as it once was in Delgovicia.
The central element of the festival is our Re-enactment groups, with Legio VI Victrix, Magister Militum, Longthorpe Legion and the Brigantes of Wincobank in their camp as well as the wonderful Equistry with their Roman Cavalry displays.
Other groups such as Sylvankin, Lena the Aerialist and artisans will once demonstrate craftsmanship and skills of daily Roman life as do our Roman history researchers, archaeologists, authors and talks, all of whom will have something interesting to show or tell.
The Roman Festival makes a great emphasis on the family day out, if we can inspire future historians and archaeologists, then our local history is safe for years to come. To that end, our kids activities will include tile, sword and shield painting, mosaic making, dressing up, Roman games, axe and plumbata throwing, which we hope will challenge their conceptions of life for Roman children against their own in modern day. They can even join the Roman Legion!
Our food and drink outlets complete the set up for a great family fun day.
For more information on the Museum, volunteering or the Roman Festival, please see our website www.maltonmuseum.co.uk
Notes for editors
The settlement of Delogovicia was a calvary base and established around AD71.
Formerly thought to be Derventio, recent research has suggested that Derventio was more likely to have been Stamford Bridge and Delogvicia is now the more widely accepted name for the Orchard Field site.
Malton Museum reopened for the season on 3rd April and has many items from the fort and local villas such as Langton and Hovingham on display.

Conflict Between Church & State – An Audience with King Henry VIII
Date: Thursday 4th September 2025
Time: 7.30pm
Location: The Milton Rooms
Tickets: £15pp
The year is 1542 and the King is in a contemplative mood. Events of recent years weigh heavily upon him – the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, the break with Rome and the dissolution of the Monasteries.
This is the sister show to ‘Divorced, Beheaded, Died’. Of this show, it has been said:
“…. a bravura performance as an aged (and lame) Henry VIII. This is Henry, at once dangerous and yet tinged with regret. There is humour and pathos here, as well as convincing menace…. Not to be missed!” The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough Cathedral
www.selectsociety.co.uk
Jack Abbot is a performer who has specialised in recreating historical characters for more than 25 years, has appeared at numerous heritage, educational and corporate venues across the UK and the USA; including many managed by the National Trust, English Heritage, Historic Scotland and other such bodies.
Of the 30 or more characters he performs, Henry VIII is the most popular. First created as a one-man show, more than 12 years ago, the show has gone through a number of revisions and now is offered as a theatrical experience in which the audience comes face-to-face with the King.
The King breaks the ‘fourth wall’ in that he directly refers to the audience who, at the close, are invited to ask questions – a lively Q & A session often ensues with there being some surprising answers!
Presented by Select Society – a company which has provided historical performance services to the UK heritage industry – English Heritage, National Trust, Historic Scotland and numerous museums, castles, and associated venues in the UK and the USA and to educational, corporate, social, and theatrical venues; as well as film, TV, theatre, and radio productions.

Malton Museum: Walking Tour - Romans in Malton
Malton Museum Walking Tour: Romans in Malton
Date: Saturday 7th June 2025
Time: 11am - 12.30pm
Meet at Roman Fort, Orchard Fields, just off Old Malton Road
Archaeological work on Malton’s Roman Fort suggests that it was one of very few in the country that was probably operated in varying strength throughout most of the Roman occupation. Roman soldiers were efficient builders and military forts were regularly altered, abandoned and re-instated as necessity arose. Partly built over later by the Normans and cut through even later by a railway track, what is left of the fort site is an unevenly shaped grass field with banks and ditches, but with many hidden stories to discover. Our tour explains the layout of the fort, and the people who lived there for a time. Come and learn about the life of a typical Roman soldier.
The tour takes about 90 minutes. We use audio headsets to ensure everyone can hear the guides when the town is busy. The maximum size of a group is 20.
Cost £10.00 per person, includes an information pack.
Please note that the fort is an uneven area of roughly mown grass which can also be damp in wet weather, so please wear suitable footwear.

Cosy Cottage: Soothing Sound Bath: Cleanse, Calm & Realign
Soothing Sound Bath: Cleanse, Calm & Realign
Dates: 31st May 2025
Location: 17 Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LX
Step into stillness, in the late spring early evening, and surrender to the deeply calming experience of this Soothing Sound Bath, lovingly held by experienced sound practitioner Julia Thompson.
Designed to gently quiet the mind and nourish the spirit, this 90-minute session offers a rare opportunity to fully switch off from the outside world and connect with the healing power of sound.
Julia will guide you through a meditative sound journey using a combination of crystal singing bowls, chimes, and grounding instruments, all chosen to support the body’s natural ability to restore and rebalance. These vibrations work at a cellular level, helping to release stored tension, regulate the nervous system, and promote emotional clarity.
Throughout the session, you’ll be invited to simply lie back and relax — letting the sounds wash over you in waves of calm. There will be gentle guidance to settle you into the space, followed by a period of quiet integration at the end, allowing you to return to the present moment feeling lighter, clearer, and more deeply connected to yourself. Whether you’re new to sound healing or returning to deepen your practice, this immersive session offers a nurturing pause for body, mind and soul.
You may wish to bring a yoga mat, blanket, and any cushions or eye masks that will help you feel comfortable and supported, however a mat, pillow and blanket will be provided. We encourage you to bring cosy layers as some may feel cooler lying in stillness for this length of time. You may also wish to bring a journal for any reflections that arise after the session, however this is optional.
Enjoy a welcome beverage and 15% off all Cosy Cottage products on the day.
For more information or to book your place please visit The Cosy Cottage website here.

Malton Museum: An Evening with artist Emily Burns
MALTON MUSEUM PASS FUNDING HURDLE
Malton Museum first opened in January 1935. Called The Roman Malton Museum, it had been created in response to a series of archaeological excavations conducted around the town which uncovered some exciting finds, asserting the importance of Delgovicia in the Roman world.
The museum was initially located in the Milton Rooms, before relocating to the Old Town Hall in 1982. This extra space allowed it to display a greater range of exhibitions, including newly acquired Medieval objects. Sadly, the museum became homeless in 2012, until new premises were found in the Subscription Rooms in 2013, a stone's throw away from where the museum first opened.
As part of its 90th birthday celebrations, the museum is inviting you to make 2025 the year you get involved, whether that's by visiting the museum, volunteering, coming on a guided tour, attending a talk or taking part in our popular Roman Festival.
We've also commissioned local print artist Emily Burns to create a limited run of 90 prints inspired by an item in our collection. The Goddess of Malton is her interpretation of a Roman fresco uncovered in the town and now on display in the museum. Pop into the museum to purchase your own copy!
Malton Museum are delighted to announce an evening with Emily on Tuesday 27th May at the Museum at 7.30pm to find out all about the goddess and how she produced the print. You can even have a go at your own linocut. Cost is £5 and this is refunded if you buy a print.
