Malton Museum: Walking Tour - Malton’s Medieval Story

Malton Museum Walking Tour: Malton’s Medieval Story

Date: Saturday 1st August 2026

Time: 11am - 12.30pm

Meet 11.30 am at St Mary’s Priory Church, 18 Town St, Old Malton, Malton YO17 7HB.

Malton Museum offers an interesting variety of public guided walking tours around the town’s historic centre.

The layout of Malton town centre has changed very little since medieval times, but its early origins are now well concealed behind later Georgian and Victorian buildings. St Mary’s Priory Church in Old Malton is the largest remaining visible evidence of the area’s flourishing medieval past. Join us there for an illustrated talk in which we reveal the hidden history of the origins of both Old and New Malton. This will be followed by a guided look at key features inside the church and in the former priory grounds by the river.

Tour length – 1.5 hours approx. We recommend wearing sensible footwear and bringing a raincoat). We use audio headsets to ensure everyone can hear the guides when the town is busy.  The maximum size of a group is 20.

Cost £10.00 per person, includes an information pack.

Cosy Cottage: Soothing Sound Bath: Cleanse, Calm & Realign

Soothing Sound Bath: Cleanse, Calm & Realign

Dates: 13th September 2026 (other dates include 3rd May and 5th July)

Location: 17 Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LX

Tickets: £30.00

Step into stillness, in the late spring early evening, and surrender to the deeply calming experience of this Soothing Sound Bath, lovingly held by experienced sound practitioner Julia Thompson.

Designed to gently quiet the mind and nourish the spirit, this 90-minute session offers a rare opportunity to fully switch off from the outside world and connect with the healing power of sound.

Julia will guide you through a meditative sound journey using a combination of crystal singing bowls, chimes, and grounding instruments, all chosen to support the body’s natural ability to restore and rebalance. These vibrations work at a cellular level, helping to release stored tension, regulate the nervous system, and promote emotional clarity.

Throughout the session, you’ll be invited to simply lie back and relax — letting the sounds wash over you in waves of calm. There will be gentle guidance to settle you into the space, followed by a period of quiet integration at the end, allowing you to return to the present moment feeling lighter, clearer, and more deeply connected to yourself. Whether you’re new to sound healing or returning to deepen your practice, this immersive session offers a nurturing pause for body, mind and soul.

You may wish to bring a yoga mat, blanket, and any cushions or eye masks that will help you feel comfortable and supported, however a mat, pillow and blanket will be provided. We encourage you to bring cosy layers as some may feel cooler lying in stillness for this length of time. You may also wish to bring a journal for any reflections that arise after the session, however this is optional.

Enjoy a welcome beverage and 15% off all Cosy Cottage products on the day.

Ryedale Blues Club “Dirt Road” at the Milton Rooms

The Dirt Road Band are Steve Walwyn, guitar and vocals, Horace Panter, bass and Ted Duggan, drums. They play hard, punchy blues-rock music that makes your heart beat faster.

Walwyn has played guitar for a living for the past 45 years, 32 of those as a member of Dr Feelgood. Panter was a founding member of The Specials. He’s been doing this a while too, as has Duggan who has enjoyed spells with Banco de Gaia and more recently, Badfinger. Three highly proficient and time-served players doing what they do best.

DRB started as a side project about five years ago and has now taken centre stage. Their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Righteous’ was released in July 2024.

The creative process came naturally with these players feeding off one another. You can see it in their live performance too – “Seasoned professionals with the energy of teenagers” as one contemporary musician observed.

Hilarity Bites - Comedy Evening

Hilarity Bites - Comedy Evening

September’s Hilarity Bites Comedy Club brings you:

Peter Brush
A highly distinctive performer and deft writer of finely-crafted jokes, He unassumingly takes the stage with his slight, bespectacled frame and scruffy hair before consummately conquering it with an arsenal of razor sharp quirky one liners and peerlessly original routines, all delivered in an amusingly awkward fashion. Peter performs at all the major clubs across the UK, as well as having done many of its biggest festivals,

Pete Selwood
A hotly tipped up-and-coming comedian on the circuit, Pete Selwood has quickly risen through the comedy ranks with swagger. After winning the Lawrence Batley New Yorkshire Comedian of the Year  he has gone from strength to strength. The Yorkshireman focuses on tales of Northern life. Being born with only one hand also gives him a unique view and experience of the world around him, poking fun at having a disability in modern Britain.

Elaine Robertson
With a surreal eye for observational comedy and keen knack for audience interaction, Elaine has been described as ‘Laugh out loud’, ‘Natural, effortless and off-the-cuff (The Cherwell) and a ‘Brilliant wit and comedic talent’ (Ed Fringe Review).
In 2022 Elaine was a Regional Finalist for BBC New Comedian of the Year.

Please note: Line-ups are subject to change in unavoidable circumstances.
The show may contain strong language and adult themes.

Captain Clap and the Burning Sensations - Punk Band

The most infectious pop punk covers around!

Some years ago three men, all old enough to know better, decided the time was right to get together and play pop punk, only missing the genre’s peak by a couple of decades.

Since then, they’ve been bringing pop punk covers, bad jokes and excellent nights to pubs and clubs around Yorkshire. They have played local festivals, organised fundraisers and had the band name laughed at on the radio by Chris Moyles.

Expect pop punk classics, scene anthems and inappropriate song choices.

The band will be supported by our very own Mooch on stage at 7.30pm. Doors and bar open 6.30pm.

Tickets £10pp

The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican

The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican

Tickets: £20

Location: The Milton Rooms, Malton Market Place, Malton

Founded in Barnsley Rock City in 2006 by their outspoken and energetic ringleader Scott Doonican, The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican are on a mission.

Far from being your typical folk ensemble, this cult-like collective of like-minded knitwear enthusiasts are determined to follow in their spiritual father’s immortal footsteps and keep his legacy alive. Scott and his brothers-from-other-mothers, Mo-Jo Doonican, Dave Doonican and the Reight Reverend Jeremiah Rickenbacker III, have quite the talent for Bar-Stewardising other famous people’s songs with new satirical comedy lyrics, on folk instruments.

To complete their outrageously understated image, the Doonicans have become instantly recognisable for their immaculate hair and their stylish choice of sexy knitwear, and instantly memorable for their lairy, no-holds-barred, anarchic live shows.

A group that is both perpetually on the move, ever-evolving and joyously independent, they have played close to 1,300 side-splitting shows to date, and have brought smiles and belly-laughs to audiences across the UK.

They continue to wow audiences with a fine selection of their greatest hits, including the likes of “Jump Ararnd”, “The Lady In Greggs”, “How Deep Is Your Glove?”, “Paint ’em Back”, “Goat Yoga” and “If I Could Punch A Face… It’d Be Justin Bieber’s”.

Death in the Theatre

Death in the Theatre

“A richly entertaining account of tragic theatre accidents and murders most foul. If theatre walls could talk, what secrets would they reveal? Chris Wood provides fascinating answers with tales of brawling ushers, murderously jealous husbands, stampeding crowds and infant tragedies. A meticulously researched and vivid collection of lives lost in the palaces of dreams. A must-read for all lovers of the theatre, providing shocks and gasps of horror when real life proves to be more dramatic than any play on stage.” – Hugh Bonneville

“Immaculately researched and beautifully macabre. This is a real treat for anyone who is either a fan of the theatre or of untimely deaths. I loved it!” – Peter James

Kemps presents : Terry Deary “A History of the World in Ten Years”

Join Terry Deary, the number one Sunday Times bestselling author, for a lively and laugh-out-loud exploration of history’s most pivotal conflicts, told only as he can.

In his latest book, A History of the World in Ten Wars, Deary takes us on a fast-paced irreverent journey through the battles that shaped our world, asking the big questions:
What is war actually good for?
Why do we keep making the same mistakes?
And is there ever a better way?

Expect surprising insights, unexpected truths and plenty of humour including:
Why ancient Greeks finally united after centuries of fighting each other
The Mongols’ ingenious (and oddly practical) approach to warfare
How teabags were invented by accident
Why Napoleon wasn’t defeated by winter – but by a heatwave
And why the ‘World Wars’ might really have been one long war with a break

Ryedale Blues Club - Bison Hip

Ryedale Blues Club - Bison Hip

Bison Hip were formed by long-time friends during a lockdown Zoom call in 2020. “I don’t know who actually suggested it first,” said vocalist Paul. “But right away it just seemed like a great idea. Maybe it was the mid-life crisis at play!”

The band are all over 50, with the exception of keyboard player and spring chicken Steven, who clocks in at a youthful 40. By the time they finally got together in early 2021, the blueprint was clear.

“We wanted to take our love of blues and rock, and mix it up with our experiences of life,” said Paul. “Between us, we’ve been through so many things in life, ups and downs, some successes and plenty of failures, we wanted all that in the music. We needed to wrap it up in the DNA of our hometown, Glasgow, and hopefully that’s what we’ve achieved.”

The ethos is clear: real musicians, real instruments, no click tracks, culminating in a unique blues rock sound with real life stories. With the release of their debut EP ‘Dear Greens and Blues’ in March 2022, Bison Hip have hit the ground running. “There’s plenty more to come, we’re on our way up!”

Bison Hip are: Paul Sloway – vocals; Malcolm Button – drums; Steven Radziwonik – keys; John Gilmour Smith – guitar and Graeme Carswell – bass.

Malton Museum Walking Tour: Horses in Malton

Date: Saturday 21st November 2026

Time: 11am - 12.30pm

Join our experienced guides on a walk through Malton’s rich history of brewing, and discover small unlicensed brewers, local breweries such as Russell’s, big names like Cameron’s and Tetley’s, and more modern microbreweries like Brass Castle. In the 19th century there were seven commercial breweries in Malton and before that almost every pub had had its own brewhouse. We will talk about the process of brewing, visit the sites of some of the breweries and then look at a number of the numerous pubs that ‘lubricated’ our town.

What made Malton such a centre of brewing, and how has that past contributed to its present success? See the places where beer was brewed, learn about the industries connected to brewing and hear the stories of Malton’s brewers in this celebration of Malton’s proud brewing history.

The tour will end at Brass Castle Taphouse, where you’re welcome to linger and taste Malton’s brewing heritage!

Taking place on Sunday 19th July, Malton Museum are once again welcoming the whole family to its little oasis of Roman Britannia for the day on the site of the old Roman fort.

With an outstanding line-up, it will be Malton Roman Festival’s biggest ever re-enactment village and living history area, where Legionnaires and Roman Britons alike will share their knowledge of life in Malton around 200AD. The brand-new addition, The Northern Horse, will join the familiar faces of Legio VI Victrix, Eburakon, and more, with military displays tracing fascinating changes in equipment, special demonstrations from Roman cavalry, breathtaking recreations of Roman entertainment, and food delicacies of Ancient Rome freshly cooked on-site — bringing Roman history to life!

Also, Malton Museum are delighted to welcome two acclaimed authors in the historical field as special guests: Terry Deary and Lindsey Davis. The creator of Horrible Histories (Deary) first appeared at Malton Roman Festival in 2024, and proved to be widely popular among children and adults alike as he discussed his much-loved Horrible Histories series; this year, he returns to showcase his latest book, Revolting: A Riotous History of Rebellions and Revolutions.

Renowned author of Roman fiction, Lindsey Davis, whose Marcus Didius Falco Mysteries are admired worldwide, will be welcomed for the first time, making it a rare opportunity to meet one of the genre’s finest writers.

Organiser of Malton Roman Festival, Louise Lewis, said: 'The fifth Malton Roman Festival is nearly upon us! Held on top of the Roman Fort in Malton, it promises to be a great day out for all the family.’

New children’s activities include terracotta air-dry clay pot making and laurel wreath making, which will be among much-loved shield & sword painting, mosaic making, Roman helmet painting, and sorting archaeological finds.

With numerous immersive activities, Lewis adds: ‘The Kids Roman Army lines up for training at 1 pm and 3 pm, join the Legion and march around the fort!’

Local researchers, academics, and archaeologists return to share their abundance of knowledge, including MAP Archaeology, York Roman Bath Museum, York University, and the Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society. Recognisable from documentaries and History Hit podcasts with Dan Snow, Dr Simon Elliot, historian, television favourite, and frequent visitor to Malton Museum, will also appear with new stories of ancient Rome and Roman Britain.

Newly appointed Museum Coordinator, Emily Moore, said: 'I am eagerly anticipating my first Roman Festival as Museum Coordinator. Working with our wonderful volunteers to bring this vibrant event to life has been a highlight of my short time at the museum. I am looking forward to seeing Orchard Field transformed into Roman Malton on 19 July.'

Run almost entirely by volunteers, Malton Museum are committed to promoting history and heritage in the locality and invites people of all ages to what promises to be a fun family day out celebrating Malton’s rich Roman history.

Chairman of Malton Museum, Phil Crabtree, said: ‘Malton Museum will be holding its very popular Roman Festival again at Orchard Fields on Sunday 19th July.

This family-focused event draws visitors from across North Yorkshire and beyond, and this year will be better than ever with well-known authors Terry Deary and Lindsey Davis talking about their books together with other well-known authors such as Simon Elliott and Robin Price, as well as lots of children-focused activities.

We are delighted to have the support of Kemps Books, Cllr Lindsay Burr, North Yorkshire Council, Malton & Norton Lions, and Malton Rotary.’
