Everwitch Theatre ‘Bomb Happy’ VE Day 80 double bill
In the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, which this year focuses on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, this double bill of film, song and live performance using real life accounts has been specially created by award-winning writer and performer Helena Fox and actor-vocalist Natasha Jones, of Everwitch Theatre. It commemorates the 80th anniversaries of D-Day (2024) and VE Day (2025).
From D-Day to VE Day, this powerful one hour double bill of live performance (30 minutes) and short film (30 minutes) brings to life the verbatim accounts of two working class Yorkshire Normandy veterans, highlighting the lifelong impact of post-traumatic stress disorder and sleep trauma, not only on veterans of war but on their families.
“We’re in the water, wading to the shore, and we’re literally brushing against what looks like logs, and they’re just bodies rolling in the surf, people that we know, eighteen, nineteen, twenty-year-olds, they’re pople that we know!”
Smudger from Bomb Happy: Smudger’s Story
“I had to try to very carefully wake him up, but very carefully you know. You see, he’d be shaking. And for a moment when he woke, he’d still be back there – in the war.”
Gloria, Smudger’s wife from Bomb Happy: Smudger’s Story
“Bomb Happy is a slang phrase we use for being under fire for many days at a time. It does describe the condition you become.”
Smudger from Bomb Happy, Smudger’s Story

Cosy Cottage Healing Sound Bath
Step into stillness before the Christmas rush, and surrender to the deeply calming experience of this Healing Sound Bath, lovingly held by experienced sound practitioner Julia Thompson.
Designed to gently quiet the mind and nourish the spirit, this 90-minute session offers a rare opportunity to fully switch off from the outside world and connect with the healing power of sound.
This gathering will focus on deep relaxation to promote healing and renewal, encouraging better sleep, and supporting the release of tension within both body and mind.
Julia will guide you through a meditative sound journey using a combination of crystal singing bowls, chimes, and grounding instruments, all chosen to support the body’s natural ability to restore and rebalance. These vibrations work at a cellular level, helping to release stored tension, regulate the nervous system, and promote emotional clarity.
Throughout the session, you’ll be invited to simply lie back and relax — letting the sounds wash over you in waves of calm. There will be gentle guidance to settle you into the space, followed by a period of quiet integration at the end, allowing you to return to the present moment feeling lighter, clearer, and more deeply connected to yourself.
Whether you’re new to sound healing or returning to deepen your practice, this immersive session offers a nurturing pause for body, mind, and soul.
You may wish to bring a yoga mat, blanket, and any cushions or eye masks that will help you feel comfortable and supported, however a mat, pillow, and blanket will be provided. We encourage you to bring cosy layers as some may feel cooler lying in stillness for this length of time. You may also wish to bring a journal for any reflections that arise after the session, however this is optional.
Enjoy a welcome beverage and 15% off all Cosy Cottage products on the day.
Tickets can be bought in-store or online: £30pp

Taphouse Burnout
Date: Friday 14th November 2025
Time: 7.30pm
Location: The Milton Rooms
Tickets: £10pp
Taphouse Burnout are back for 2025! Graeme Hargreaves has put together a fantastic line up of talented musicians for a night of great live music.
Gary Stewart is a singer/songwriter from Perthshire who cut his teeth performing on the Leeds Music Scene for 15 years before moving to York, where he currently lives. Stewart writes songs in the Folk/Pop vein and is influenced by the folk artists of the 1960s and 1970s (Paul Simon/James Taylor/The Eagles/Joni Mitchell/Carole King).
The Scottish songsmith has released four albums to date, the latest, ‘Lost, Now Found’, self-recorded, produced and released in June 2021. The left-hander is also no stranger to the festival circuit, having played Kendal Calling, Green Man and Larmer Tree Festivals to name but a few.
When not performing his own music, the multi-instrumentalist busies himself playing drums for Hope & Social and bass for Leeds-based Fleetwood Mac tribute, Weetwood Mac (ex-Ellen & The Escapades). He also fronts his own reworking of Paul Simon’s classic album, ‘Graceland’, with a seven-piece band.
Simon Snaize is an accomplished singer-songwriter guitarist and producer, performing solo and in duos as well as fronting the popular York based Y Street Band. His solo set is a mix of classics, blues, and Americana, delivered with strong vocals and explosive guitar playing.
Ellen Smith is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer from Leeds. In 2010 Ellen won Q Magazine’s Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition with her band Ellen & the Escapades and has since gone on to make main stage appearances at the festival a further two times.
Having spent the following years writing and touring, in 2018 Ellen signed a publishing deal with 13 Artists/Warner Chappell UK, after releasing music with dark-electro pop band Shadowlark, produced by Dan Austin (Massive Attack, Doves, Biffy Clyro),
2020 saw Ellen release her first solo material, having been commissioned to write the eponymous soundtrack to ‘Take Us Home’, an Amazon Prime docu-series following Leeds United during their momentous 2019/2020 promotion winning season.
Phil Hooley is a singer-songwriter and founder of the alt country band The Woolgatherers, Scarborough-based Phil is also busy as a solo performer. Citing Guy Clarke, John Prine and Nick Lowe among his many influences, Phil’s songs are lyrically driven and always thought-provoking.
Describing himself as ’late to the party’ having worked the pubs and clubs for many years, and with an
easy stage presence, Phil has received many plaudits for his live shows, and is a favourite on the festival circuit. He has released two albums to date, ‘Songs From the Back Room’ and ’Provenance’ in April this year, both receiving critical acclaim from the reviewers.
