Malton Museum: Walking Tour - River, Road, Railway
Malton Museum Walking Tour: River, Road, Railway
Date: Saturday 23rd August 2025
Time: 11am-12.30pm
Where: Meet at the Malton Museum, 36 Yorkersgate, Malton, YO17 7AB.
Malton Museum offers an interesting variety of public guided walking tours around the town’s historic centre.
This tour takes a route along a stretch of riverbank via Navigation Wharf, now a forgotten backwater, telling the story of Malton’s 18th and 19th century transport and trade, and life before the motor car. This area of town was once an extremely important area bustling with life, and the station was once a noisy place with an imposing railway goods handling building, an outsized cattle dock, and extensive coal sidings that served a wide area. Come and learn about how and where it all happened! (We recommend wearing sensible footwear and bringing a raincoat).
The tour takes about 90 minutes. We use audio headsets to ensure everyone can hear the guides when the town is busy. The maximum size of a group is 20.
Cost £10.00 per person, includes an information pack.
Visit www.maltonmuseum.co.uk for more information.

Malton Museum Lecture: Photography History
MALTON MUSEUM: LECTURE PROGRAMME SUMMER 2025
Thursday 21st August - Nicholas Hatton
The Photo Detective – Uncovering additional context from 19th century photographs from Malton Photographic Studio
In 1850, the first of many photographic artists came to Malton. Photography had only been commercially viable for about a decade, but over the next 50 years, it really took off. Everyone wanted their picture taken, and the number of photographers in town rapidly grew. So, who were these photographers? What happened to them? Who got rich, and who went broke? Who had a fight in church?
The earliest studios were temporary and basic but eventually permanent studios appeared around town. So, where were these studios? Who commissioned a purpose-built studio? What can still be seen around town today?
Even after more than a century, a lot of original photos from these Malton-based photographers are still around, mainly because so many were made. We’ll look at some photos from the presenter’s personal collection to provide additional context and insights: What can we determine about when and where a photo was taken? What can we discover about the people in the photos and the lives they lived?
This lecture will be supported with images from Nick’s research.
All the lectures are in Malton Assembly Rooms and entrance is though the Museum on Yorkersgate. They all start at 7p.m. and they cost £10 per head. Booking online is through the events section of the Malton Museum website or you can pay at the door.
