It was the decade that fashion forgot – but dust off your lurex loons, the Seventies are back in town.

Forest Bathing at The Yorkshire Arboretum

Forest Bathing in the Arboretum.

£30pp - INCLUDES ADMISSION - booking essential on visit@yorkshirearboretum.org or ring 01653 648598.

Forest Bathing started in Japan in the 1980’s and is now part of the national health programme as laid out by the NHS People Plan and the NHS People Promise. These outline a number of key programmes that are in place to assist organisations to develop a culture of wellbeing, in which their workforce feel supported and well at work.

Forest Bathing is about slowing down and noticing the things in nature we so often take for granted. Just spending a few hours in nature can help you to relax by focusing on the senses in a mindful way. There is a wealth of documented evidence about the physical, mental, emotional and social benefits to connecting with nature and to each other.

Research shows that trees release powerful natural chemicals that can have many health benefits which can include: reducing blood pressure, lowering stress levels, lowering blood sugar levels, relieving problems with sleep and lifting depression - to name but a few.

Tandy Taylor will be your tutor - she has spent over 30 years working overseas on different training and educational projects in developing countries. She is a qualified Forest Bathing practitioner (recognised by the Complementary Medical Association.

Just 2 hours of Forest Bathing can have a powerful impact. The effects can stay with you for up to a week. Just slowing down, reconnecting with nature and ourselves helps to open up the senses so we really notice what’s around us. This is done through mindful walking and a few gentle activities that focus on the senses and enhance wellbeing.

Malton Museum Lecture: The African Emperor – Septimius Severus with Simon Elliott

MALTON MUSEUM: LECTURE PROGRAMME SUMMER 2025

Thursday 9th October - Dr Simon Elliott

Join noted historian and author Dr Simon Elliott to hear about his latest book, ‘The African Emperor’. Afterwards there will be the chance to ask questions and purchase a book signed by the author.

Severus was born into the richest family in a North African spring in Leptis and came to power at the height of Rome’s might. Comprised of 50,000 men, the emperor not only led the largest army to ever campaign in Britain as part of a Roman military establishment, but he also left a might legacy in the built environment. There is undeniable Severan influence over the Forum Romanum, his hometown of Leptis Magna, and even the land walls in London that define the City’s Square Mile were delineated under his rule.

Severus used his North African upbringing as the template for, what Simon refers to as, the Severan reset. This was the first major post-Augustan reformation of the Roman world and established the emperor’s dynasty, which lasted almost half a century. Such was the scale of this reorganisation, which some may name a hostile takeover, that it was not repeated until the succession of Diocletian more than ninety years after Severus became emperor.

The African Emperor explores the life and eventual death of one of the greatest warrior emperors in history. Read of his several near-death experiences and how he monumentalised his rule across the empire and his visits to every region. Born in the blistering heat, Severus died in the freezing cold of a Northern British winter in York with the deathbed advice: ‘Be of one mind with your family, enrich the soldiers, and despise the rest.
