MALTON MUSEUM: LECTURE PROGRAMME SUMMER 2025
15th May - Steve Roskhams, Senior Lecturer at the University of York
The first of Malton Museum’s summer lectures is on the 15th May and is a must for all with an interest in the developing story of the site. Its is delivered by Steve Roskams who joined the archaeology department at the University of York in 1983, becoming a senior lecturer and remaining on the staff for 40 years. He has worked on excavations in Tunisia, Algeria and Beirut, and locally on the investigation of Iron Age and Roman settlements on the Yorkshire Wolds. He was involved for many years in the University training excavation at Wharram Percy; and also lead the more recent student excavations to the east of Malton fort.
In this, his second lecture for the Museum, he will discuss and share new findings from the excavations outside the north east gate of Malton's Roman fort and what was learnt about the changing relationships between soldier and the civilian population who lived in the Vicus area that was adjacent to the fort.
