Dark, Jet Black: The Legacy of Whitby’s jet with Sarah Steele

As part of the Museum’s series of summer lectures, Sarah Steele is giving a talk on “Dark, Jet Black, the legend of Whitby Jet” at 7 pm on Thursday 9th May.

Jet has a long association with Malton and a small jet bear was found on the Orchard Field Roman site and is currently on display at the museum.

Jet links through to the Victorian era and it was during that time Whitby rose to prominence as a manufacturing centre. Sarah is widely considered as the world’s leading expert in black gemstone identification and is an Accredited Gemologist.

The summer lectures are all held at the lecture theatre in the Assembly Rooms with entrance through Malton Museum in Yorkersgate. Tickets are £10 each.

Bookings for all the summer lectures can be made via the Malton Museum website. https://www.maltonmuseum.co.uk/events
