Comedy vs Climate Change - Climate Comedy Workshops (day 1)

Comedy vs Climate Change - Climate Comedy Workshops

Location: The Milton Rooms, Market Place, Malton

Ticket Price: from £5.00

Calling those aged 18- 30 in North Yorkshire! Comedy vs Climate Change is bringing climate comedy workshops in spring 2024! Partnering with the Ryevitalise Landscape Partnership scheme to develop two interactive workshops that use humour to explore environmental issues based around our local rivers.
Whilst climate change isn’t funny, we believe that humour has a vital role in shaping a greener, better and fairer future. Comedy has long been used as a tool to explore topics that are difficult or taboo, and to challenge audiences to see familiar issues in new ways. With this in mind, our aim is to find hope in climate humour – and to laugh a lot along the way.

Our teachers have ample experience across stand-up, sketch, character, clown and improv, and have taught comedy across the UK. Workshops use local stories and perspectives about the environment for comedic inspiration. You don’t have to have any comedy or performing experience to join us, or be an expert in climate change!

Company: Select Society Theatre Company

Production: ‘Divorced, Beheaded, Died: An Audience with King Henry VIII’

‘The year is 1544 and King Henry, the Eighth of that name, is engaged upon Royal Progress about his Realm; and has halted here to afford his Loyal Subjects the opportunity to have 'audience' with their Sovereign Lord and King’.

This one-man, two-act show, has toured extensively across the ‘Realm’, and to the USA. Set in the year 1544, Henry recounts the events of his life and long reign, telling of his wives and of his children. The second Act concludes with a Q&A in which the audience are invited to pose questions on any related topic – a lively Q&A session is assured and there are always surprising answers!

Jack Abbot (‘Henry VIII’) recreates ‘historical characters’ at heritage, educational, and corporate venues across the UK and the USA; and has performed as ‘Henry VIII’ at Windsor Castle on behalf of he Royal Household.

“Jack Abbot looks the picture of Henry VIII …. an imposing figure …. great presence …. poignant …. Abbot is a powerhouse and embodies Henry VIII perfectly ….” (Simon Topping – Brighton Fringe Festival 2021)

Interestingly, DNA tests have revealed that Jack is the 21st cousin, 6 times removed, from Henry VIII – perhaps there is more to it than having a belly and a beard!

The Long Lane Theatre Company presents: The Giant Killers

The Long Lane Theatre Company presents: The Giant Killers

Date: Thursday 4 Jul 2024

Time: 7:30 pm

Tickets: £15.00, concessions £12.00

Set in the early years of Association Football, The Giant Killers follows a ragtag bunch of Lancashire mill workers who defied all odds to become the first working class team in the country to play in the FA Cup.

Left tired and despondent from the cotton famine of the 1870s, this small group of northern lads found pride and hope in a game that up until then had been reserved for the upper classes.

Darwen FC rose up against prevailing social prejudice and the might of the Football Association, to earn a place in history as the first real ‘giant killers’ in English football, and take on the ‘poshest team of all’ – the Old Etonians.

Scoring a massive moral victory for all working class people, the team proved that passion and spirit is worth more than wealth and privilege. When the battlefield is the football pitch, everyone is equal.

The Giant Killers is an absorbing, heart felt story of a town that came together to achieve the impossible and win the respect of the nation. A rip roaring evening out, whether you know the offside rule or not!

Recommended Age 14+ as it contains moderate swearing and one scene that some may consider distressing for those under the age of 14.

Malton Museum Reopens for the 2024 Season

On Saturday 30th March, Malton Museum reopens its doors to the public.

Find out about Malton’s fascinating history from the Roman heritage to Medieval artefact discoveries, the Georgian Boomtime and more!

Malton Museum News

Malton Museum reopens Easter Saturday!

The highlight of the exhibition this year is an Iron Age (800BC – 43AD) sword and spear heads from a burial in Pocklington. The display will tell the story of the warrior and his weapons and is being loaned to us by locally-based firm MAP Archaeological Practice. Malton Museum would also like to thank developer Barret-David Wilson Homes for the loan of this exciting artefact.

The find was made in Burnby Lane, Pocklington and consisted of a deep grave with the skeleton of a young adult male warrior, 18-25 years old. The iron sword in a wooden scabbard had been laid across his torso, extending upwards over the lower left arm.  A group of five spear-heads had been positioned along the back, four parallel with the spine and one at the lower back at right angles. It is thought this ritual spear placement is equivalent to a modern-day gun salute.

The sword is 760mm (2ft 5 inches) long with a blade of just over 610mm (2 feet) and an organic hilt with a horn grip. Two ovoid washers, one close to the hilt guard and the second by the pommel, can still be seen.

This is year 2 of our three-year exhibition exploring “A Sense of Place”. It highlights objects which tell stories of the heritage of our two towns and how the towns have changed to become what we see today.

This year we plan to have more objects on display which have not been seen since moving from the old museum. New this year is a collection of jet. Whitby jet has been used for decoration over thousands of years, but it was most popular during the Roman and Victorian eras. Our Roman collection of jet has indicated that the Romans were probably manufacturing jet pieces here. A call out to the local community for examples of Victorian or modern jet brought some interesting pieces which will also be on display.

A new venture this year is a simulation of a 1930s farmhouse dairy. It shows lots of objects people will recognise from the past, but will they know how important butter was to Malton in times gone by?

We hope that this year’s exhibition will attract families to visit. There are many more activities for children to explore, including dressing up, a mini dig and an I-Spy trail. And one of our favourite exhibits – the imprint of a child’s foot from the villa at Langton – will be on display for the first time in many years.

Finally, we are linking up with the local Masonic Lodge which is also housed within the Milton Rooms. They are putting on a display in the Museum highlighting some of their interesting objects and the work that the Lodge carries out locally.

Malton Museum re-opens on Easter Saturday 30th March at 10:30 a.m. and will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays until the end of October.

Future Landscapes: Six Inches of Soil Screening

You’re invited to the Six Inches of Soil screening, the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food - to heal the soil, our health and provide for local communities.

The screening will take place in the Grecian Hall at Castle Howard. Popcorn will be available to purchase on the night and there will also be a bar open.

The Future Landscapes series launched at the end of last year to provide a forum for Castle Howard to share new ideas, hear from subject matter experts and grow a community who can support the Estate as they transform the landscape of Castle Howard to be ready for an ever-uncertain future. As the land management transition approaches to promote ecological diversity, store carbon, regenerate natural process, and create complex habitats that allow wildlife to thrive - we always come back to foundations of our landscapes, the soil beneath our feet.

For the March instalment of the Future Landscapes series, Castle Howard are proud to be hosting a screening of Six Inches of Soil, a British made film-documentary that tells the story of those food producers who’ve been innovating and collaborating to transform the landscapes they work in and the communities they support.

Tickets: £5 and can be booked via the Castle Howard website.
